Fin de Siecle
The art and literature of the 1890s.
Fin de siecle or 'end of century', a phrase applied to the last ten years of the nineteenth century, suggests a transitional period, in which some writers and artists were consciously abandoning old ideas and conventions and attempting to discover and set up new techniques and artistic objectives.
The decade is said to have three characters:
1. Decadence, exemplified in Pater and Oscar Wilde.
2. Realism or sense of fact, represented by Gissing, Shaw, and George Moore.
3. Radical or revelutionary social aspiration, marked by numerous new movements.
