    A Mothers Love

A little boy came up to his mother in the kitchen one evening while she was fixing supper, and
handed her a piece of paper that he had been writing on. After his Mom dried her hands on an
apron, she read it, and this is what it said:l
    For cutting the grass: $5.00
For cleaning up my room this w $1.00
For going to the store for you: $.50
Baby-sitting my kid brother while you went shopping: $.25
    Taking out the garbage: $1.00
For getting a good report card: $5.00
For cleaning up and raking the yard: $2.00
    Total owed: $14.75
Well, his mother looked at him standing there, and the boy could see the memories flashing
through her mind. She picked up the pen, turned over the paper he'd written on, and this is
    what she wrote:
    l
lFor the nine months I carried you while you were growing inside me:l
    lNo Charge
For all the nights that I've sat up with you, doctored and prayed for you:
    l
    lNo Charge
For all the trying times, and all the tears that you've caused through the years:

    lNo Charge
For all the nights that were filled with dread, and for the worries I knew were ahead:
    l
    lNo Charge
For the toys, food, clothes, and even wiping your nose:
    l
    No Charge
Son, when you add it up, the cost of my love is: No Charge. When the boy finished reading
what his mother had written, there were big tears in his eyes, and he looked straight at his
mother and said, "Mom, I sure do love you." And then he took the pen and in great big letters
    he wrote: "PAID IN FULL".
    l
    lLessons:l
You will never how much your parents worth till you become a parent
Be a giver not an asker, especially with your parents. there is a lot to give, besides money.
    l
lAdvice: IF your mom is alive and close to you, give her a big kiss and ask her for forgiveness. If
she is far away, call her. if she passed away, pray for her.
    l

    Keep on knocking

When Colonel Harland Sanders retired at the age of 65, he had little to show for himself,
except an old Caddie roadster, a $105 monthly pension check, and a recipe for chicken.
Knowing he couldn't live on his pension, he took his chicken recipe in hand, got behind the
wheel of his van, and set out to make his fortune. His first plan was to sell his chicken recipe to
restaurant owners, who would in turn give him a residual for every piece of chicken they sold--5
cents per chicken. The first restaurateur he called on turned him down.
    So did the second.
    So did the third.
In fact, the first 1008 sales calls Colonel Sanders made ended in rejection. Still, he continued
to call on owners as he traveled across the USA, sleeping in his car to save money. Prospect
number 1009 gave him his first "yes."
After two years of making daily sales he had signed up a total of five restaurants. Still the
Colonel pressed on, knowing that he had a great chicken recipe and that someday the idea
    would catch on.
Of course, you know how the story ends. The idea DID catch on. By 1963 the Colonel had 600
restaurants across the country selling his secret recipe of Kentucky Fried Chicken (with 11
herbs and spices). In 1964 he was bought out by future Kentucky governor John Brown. Even
though the sale made him a multi-millionaire, he continued to represent and promote KFC until
    his death in 1990.
Colonel Sanders' story teaches an important lesson: its never too late to decide to never give
    up.
Earlier in his life the Colonel was involved in other business ventures--but they weren't
successful. He had a gas station in the 30's, a restaurant in the 40's, and he gave up on both
of them. At the age of 65, however, Harland Sanders decided his chicken idea was the right
idea, and he refused to give up, even in spite of repeated rejection.
He knew that if he kept on knocking on doors, eventually someone would say "yes." This is
how Jesus has commanded to approach life. He said, "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and
you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." (Luke 11:9) This verse follows a story
Jesus told emphasizing the importance of a "never-give-up" attitude in prayer. Jesus is saying,
"Ask--not just once, but as many times as is necessary. Keep on knocking till the door is
opened." If you have made half-hearted attempts at doing God's will in your life...if you have
given up too easily in the past...remember: It's never too late to become persistent. It's never
too late to decide to never give up. Keep on knocking. Keep on asking. Keep on seeking.

      Rescue at Sea

Years ago, in a small fishing village in Holland, a young boy taught the world about the
rewards of unselfish service. Because the entire village revolved around the fishing industry, a
volunteer rescue team was needed in cases of emergency.
One night the winds raged, the clouds burst and a gale force storm capsized a fishing boat at
sea. Stranded and in trouble, the crew sent out the S.O.S. The captain of the rescue rowboat
team sounded the alarm and the villagers assembled in the town square overlooking the bay.
While the team launched their rowboat and fought their way through the wild waves, the
villagers waited restlessly on the beach, holding lanterns to light the way back.
An hour later, the rescue boat reappeared through the fog and the cheering villagers ran to
greet them. Falling exhausted on the sand, the volunteers reported that the rescue boat could
not hold any more passengers and they had to leave one man behind. Even one more
passenger would have surely capsized the rescue boat and all would have been lost.
Frantically, the captain called for another volunteer team to go after the lone survivor. Sixteenyear-
old Hans stepped forward. His mother grabbed his arm, pleading, "Please don’t go. Your
father died in a shipwreck 10 years ago and your older brother, Paul, has been lost at sea for
three weeks. Hans, you are all I have left."
Hans replied, "Mother, I have to go. What if everyone said, ‘I can’t go, let someone else do it?’
Mother, this time I have to do my duty. When the call for service comes, we all need to take our
turn and do our part." Hans kissed his mother, joined the team and disappeared into the night.
Another hour passed, which seemed to Hans’ mother like an eternity. Finally, the rescue boat
darted through the fog with Hans standing up in the bow. Cupping his hands, the captain
called, "Did you find the lost man?" Barely able to contain himself, Hans excitedly yelled back,
"Yes, we found him. Tell my mother it’s my older brother, Paul!"

        Letter to Parents

        Dear Mother and Dad:
Since I left for college I have been remiss in writing and I am sorry for my thoughtlessness in
not having written before. I will bring you up-to-date now, but before you read on, please sit
down. You are not to read any further unless you are sitting down, okay?
Well, then, I am getting along pretty well now. The skull fracture and the concussion I got when
I jumped out the window of my dormitory when it caught on fire shortly after my arrival here is
pretty well healed now. I only spent two weeks in the hospital and now I can see almost
normally and only get those sick headaches once a day.
Fortunately, the fire in the dormitory, and my jump, was witnessed by an attendant at the gas
station near the dorm, and he was the one who called the fire department and the ambulance.
He also visited me in the hospital and since I had nowhere to live because of the burnt-out
dormitory, he was kind enough to invite me to share his apartment with him. It’s really a
basement room, but it’s kind of cute.
He is a very fine boy and we have fallen deeply in love and are planning to get married. We
haven’t got the exact date yet, but it will be before my pregnancy begins to show.
Yes, Mother and Dad, I am pregnant. I know how much you are looking forward to being
grandparents and I know you will welcome the baby and give it the same love and devotion
and tender care you gave me when I was a child.
The reason for the delay in our marriage is that my boyfriend has a minor infection which
prevents us from passing our premarital blood tests and I carelessly caught it from him.
Now that I have brought you up to date, I want to tell you that there was no dormitory fire, I did
not have a confession or skull fracture, I was not in the hospital, I am not pregnant, I am not
engaged, I am not infected, and there is no boyfriend.
However, I am getting a "D" in American history, and an "F" in chemistry and I want you to see
those marks in their proper perspective.
        Your loving daughter,
        Sharon

          Somebody is proud of you

A teenager lived alone with his father, and the two of them had a very special relationship.
Even though the son was always on the bench, his father was always in the stands cheering.
          He never missed a game.
This young man was still the smallest of the class when he entered high school. But his father
continued to encourage him but also made it very clear that he did not have to play football if
he didn't want to. But the young man loved football and decided to hang in there.
He was determined to try his best at every practice, and perhaps he'd get to play when he
became a senior. All through high school he never missed a practice nor a game, but remained
a bench. His faithful father was always in the stands, always with words of encouragement for
          him.
When the young man went to college, he decided to try out for the football team as a
"walk-on." Everyone was sure he could never make the cut, but he did. The coach admitted
that he kept him on the roster because he always puts his heart and soul to every practice, and
at the same time, provided the other members with the spirit and hustle they badly needed.
The news that he had survived the cut thrilled him so much that he rushed to the nearest
phone and called his father. His father shared his excitement and was sent season tickets for
all the college games. This persistent young athlete never missed practice during his four years
at college, but he never got to play in the game. It was the end of his senior football season,
and as he trotted onto the practice field shortly before the big play off game, the coach met him
          with a telegram.
The young man read the telegram and he became deathly silent. Swallowing hard, he
mumbled to the coach, "My father died this morning. Is it all right if I miss practice today?" The
coach put his arm gently around his shoulder and said, "Take the rest of the week off, son. And
don't even plan to come back to the game on Saturday.
In the third quarter, when the team was ten points behind, a silent young man quietly slipped
into the empty locker room and put on his football gear. As he ran onto the sidelines, the coach
and his players were astounded to see their faithful teammate back so soon. "Coach, please let
me play. I've just go to play today," said the young man. The coach pretended not to hear him.
There was no way he wanted his worst player in this close.
Feeling sorry for the kid, the coach gave in. "All right," he said. "You can go in." Before long,
the coach, the players and everyone in the stands could not believe their eyes. This little
unknown, who had never played before was doing everything right. The opposing team could
not stop him. He ran, he passed, blocked and tackled like a star. His team began to triumph.
The score was soon tied. In the closing seconds of the game, this kid intercepted a pass and
ran all the way for the winning touchdown. The fans broke loose. His teammates hoisted him
onto their shoulders. Such cheering you've never heard! Finally, after the stands had emptied
and the team had showered and left the locker room, the coach noticed that the young man
was sitting quietly in the corner all alone.
The coach came to him and said, "Kid, I can't believe it. You were fantastic! Tell me what got
into you? How did you do it?" He looked at the coach, with tears in his eyes, and said, "Well,
you knew my dad died, but did you know that my dad was blind?" The young man swallowed
hard and forced a smile, "Dad came to all my games, but today was the first time he could see
me play, and I wanted to show him I could do it!"

            A Miracle

An inspirational story about a miracle
Like any good mother, when Karen found out that another baby was on the way, she did
what she could to help her 3-year-old son, Michael, prepare for a new sibling. They found out
that the new baby was going to be a girl, and day after day, night after night, Michael sang to
his sister in Mommy's tummy. The pregnancy progressed normally for Karen, an active member
of the Panther Creek United Methodist Church in Morristown, Tennessee. Then the labor pains
came. Every five minutes ... every minute. But complications arose during delivery. Hours of
labor. Would a C-section be required?
Finally, Michael's little sister was born. But she was in serious condition. With sirens howling
in the night, the ambulance rushed the infant to the neonatal intensive care unit at St. Mary's
Hospital, Knoxville, Tennessee. The days inched by. The little girl became worse. The pediatric
specialist told the parents to prepared for the worst.
Karen and her husband contacted a local cemetery about a burial plot. They originally fixed
up a special room in their home for the new baby - now they planned a funeral.
Michael kept begging his parents to let him see his sister, "I want to sing to her," he said.
Week two in intensive care. It looked as if a funeral would come before the week was over.
Michael kept nagging about singing to his sister, but kids are not allowed in Intensive Care.
Karen made up her mind. She decided to take Michael whether they like it or not. If he didn't
see his sister now, he may never see her alive. She dressed him in an oversized scrub suit and
marched him into ICU. He looked like a walking laundry basket, but the head nurse recognized
him as a child and bellowed, "Get that kid out of here now! No children are allowed. The
mother in Karen rose up strong, and the usually mild-mannered lady glared steel-eyed into the
head nurse's face, her lips a firm line. "He is not leaving until he sings to his sister!"
Karen towed Michael to his sister's bedside. He gazed at the tiny infant losing the battle to
live. And he began to sing. In the pure hearted voice of a 3-year-old, Michael sang: "You are
my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are gray --- " Instantly the
baby girl responded. The pulse rate became calm and steady. "Keep on singing, Michael."
"You never know, dear, how much I love you, Please don't take my sunshine away---" Her
            strained breathing became smoother.
"Keep on singing, Michael." "The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping, I dreamed I held you in
my arms..." Michael's little sister relaxed as healing rest seemed to sweep over her. "Keep on
singing, Michael." Tears conquered the face of the bossy head nurse. "You are my sunshine,
my only sunshine. Please don't, take my sunshine away."
The next day--the very next day--the little girl was well enough to go home! Woman's Day
magazine called it "The Miracle of a Brother's Song." The medical staff just called it a miracle.
Karen called it a miracle of God's love.

              Obstacles in our Path

In ancient times, a king had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid
himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock.
Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and
simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping
the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the
way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables.
On approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and
tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and
straining, he finally succeeded. As the peasant picked up his load of
vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had
              been.
The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king
indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder
from the roadway. The peasant learned what many others never
              understand.
              Moral Of the Story:
Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve one's condition.

                Getting Here From Here

An American businessman was at a pier in a small coastal Mexican
village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the
small boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The American
complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long
it took to catch them. The Mexican replied that it only took a short while.
The American then asked why he didn't stay out longer and catch more
fish. The Mexican said that he had caught enough to support his
                family's immediate needs.
The American then asked, but what do you do with the rest of your
time? The fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my
children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each
evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my friends. I have a full
                and busy life, se?or."
The American scoffed, "I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You
should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger
buy several boats and eventually you will have a fleet of fishing boats.
Instead of selling your catch to a middleman, you would sell directly to
the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control
the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this
small village and move to Mexico city, then LA and eventually New York
City where you will run your expanding enterprise."
The fisherman asked, "But se?or, how long will all this take?"
                The American replied, "15-20 years."
                "But then what, se?or?"
The American laughed and said, "That’s the best part. When the
time is right, you would sell your company stock to the public and
become very rich. You would make millions!"
                "Millions, se?or? Then what?"
The American said, "Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal
fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your
kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where
you could sip wine and play guitar with your friends

                  Unbroken Circle

                  The Circle Is Unbroken

He was driving home one evening, on a two-lane country road. Work, in
this small, mid-western community, was almost as slow as his beat-up
Pontiac. But he never quit looking. Ever since the Levis factory closed,
he'd been unemployed, and with winter raging on, the chill had finally
                  hit home.
It was a lonely road. Not very many people had a reason to be on it,
unless they were leaving. Most of his friends had already left. They had
families to feed and dreams to fulfill. But he stayed on. After all, this was
where he buried his mother and father. He was born here and knew the
                  country.
He could go down this road blind, and tell you what was on either side,
and with his headlights not working, that came in handy. It was starting
to get dark and light snow flurries were coming down. He'd better get a
                  move on.
You know, he almost didn't see the old lady, stranded on the side of the
road. But even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help.
So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac was
still sputtering when he approached her.
Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped
to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look
safe, he looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened,
standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was that chill
that only fear can put in you. He said, "I'm here to help you ma'am. Why
don't you wait in the car where it's warm. By the way, my name is Joe."
Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad
enough. Joe crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack,
skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the
tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt. As he was tightening up
the lug nuts, she rolled down her window and began to talk to him. She
told him that she was from St. Louis and was only just passing through.
She couldn't thank him enough for coming to her aid. Joe just smiled as
                  he closed her trunk.
She asked him how much she owed him. Any amount would have been
all right with her. She had already imagined all the awful things that
could have happened had he not stopped. Joe never thought twice
about the money. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone
in need, and God knows there were plenty who had given him a hand in
the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to
him to act any other way. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him
back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give
that person the assistance that they needed, and Joe added "...and
                  think of me."
He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and
depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing
into the twilight. A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe.
She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made
the last leg of her trip home. It was a dingy looking restaurant. Outside
were two old gas pumps. The whole scene was unfamiliar to her. The
                  About this ad
cash register was like the telephone of an out of work actor, it didn't ring
                  much.
Her waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair.
She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole
day couldn't erase. The lady noticed that the waitress was nearly eight
months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her
attitude. The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could
be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Joe.
After the lady finished her meal, and the waitress went to get her
change from a hundred dollar bill, the lady slipped right out the door.
She was gone by the time the waitress came back. She wondered
where the lady could be, and then she noticed something written on a
napkin. There were tears in her eyes, when she read what the lady
wrote. It said, "You don't owe me a thing, I've been there too. Someone
once helped me out, the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay
me back, here's what you do. Don't let the chain of love end with you."
Well, there were tables to clear, sugar bowls to fill, and people to serve,
but the waitress made it through another day. That night when she got
home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the
money and what the lady had written. How could she have known how
much she and her husband needed it? With the baby due next month, it
was going to be hard. She knew how worried her husband was, and as
he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered soft
and low, "Everything's gonna be all right. I love you, Joe.

                    The Gold Wrapping Paper

Once upon a time, a man punished his 5-year-old daughter for using up
the family’s only roll of expensive gold wrapping paper. Money was tight
and he became even more upset when on Christmas Eve, he saw that
the child had pasted the gold paper so as to decorate a shoebox to put
                    under the Christmas tree.
Nevertheless, the next morning the little girl, filled with excitement,
brought the gift box to her father and said, "This is for you, Daddy!" As
he opened the box, the father was embarrassed by his earlier
overreaction. But when he opened it, he found it was empty and again
his anger flared. "Don't you know, young lady,” he said harshly, “when
you give someone a present there's supposed to be something inside
                    the package!"
The little girl looked up at him with tears rolling from her eyes and said:
"Daddy, it's not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was all full."
The father was crushed. He fell on his knees and put his arms around
his precious little girl. He begged her to forgive him for his unnecessary
                    anger.
An accident took the life of the child only a short time later and it is told
that the father kept that little gold box by his bed for all the years of his
life. And whenever he was discouraged or faced difficult problems he
would open the box, take out an imaginary kiss, and remember the love
of this beautiful child who had put it there.
In a very real sense, each of us as human beings have been given an
invisible golden box filled with unconditional love and kisses from our
                    children, family, and friend friends.
There is no more precious possession anyone could hold.

                      The Ugly Cat

Everyone in the apartment complex I lived in knew who Ugly was. Ugly was the resident
tomcat. Ugly loved three things in this world: fighting, eating garbage, and, shall we say, love.
The combination of these things combined with a life spent outside had their effect on Ugly. To
start with, he had only one eye and where the other should have been was a hole. He was also
missing his ear on the same side, his left foot appeared to have been badly broken at one time,
and had healed at an unnatural angle, making him look like he was always turning the corner.
Ugly would have been a dark gray tabby, striped type, except for the sores covering his head,
neck, and even his shoulders. Every time someone saw Ugly there was the same reaction.
                      “That’s one UGLY cat !”
All the children were warned not to touch him, the adults threw rocks at him, hosed him down,
squirted him when he tried to come in their homes, or shut his paws in the door when he would
not leave. Ugly always had the same reaction.
If you turned the hose on him, he would stand there, getting soaked until you gave up and
quit. If you threw things at him, he would curl his lanky body around your feet in forgiveness.
Whenever he spied children, he would come running, meowing frantically and bump his head
against their hands, begging for their love.
If you ever picked him up he would immediately begin suckling on your shirt, earrings,
                      whatever he could find.
One day Ugly shared his love with the neighbor’s dogs. They did not respond kindly, and Ugly
was badly mauled. I tried to rush to his aid. By the time I got to where he was laying, it was
apparent Ugly’s sad life was almost at an end.
As I picked him up and tried to carry him home, I could hear him wheezing and gasping, and
could feel him struggling. It must be hurting him terribly, I thought.
Then I felt a familiar tugging, sucking sensation on my ear. Ugly, in so much pain, suffering
and obviously dying, was trying to suckle my ear. I pulled him closer to me, and he bumped
the palm of my hand with his head, then he turned his one golden eye towards me, and I could
hear the distinct sound of purring.
Even in the greatest pain, that ugly battled scarred cat was asking only for a little affection,
perhaps some compassion. At that moment I thought Ugly was the most beautiful, loving
creature I had ever seen. Never once did he try to bite or scratch me, try to get away from me,
or struggle in any way. Ugly just looked up at me completely trusting in me to relieve his pain.
Ugly died in my arms before I could get inside, but I sat and held him for a long time
afterwards, thinking about how one scarred, deformed little stray could so alter my opinion
about what it means to have true pureness of spirit, to love so totally and truly.
Ugly taught me more about giving and compassion than a thousand books, lectures, or talk
show specials ever could, and for that I will always be thankful. He had been scarred on the
outside, but I was scarred on the inside, and it was time for me to move on and learn to love
truly and deeply. To give my total to those I cared for.
Many people want to be richer, more successful, well liked, beautiful, but for me…I will always
                      try to be Ugly.

                        My Resignation

I am hereby officially tendering my resignation as an adult. I have decided I would like to accept
the responsibilities of an eight-year-old again.
I want to go to McDonald's and think that it's a four-star restaurant.
I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud puddle and make a sidewalk with rocks.
I want to think M&Ms are better than money because you can eat them.
I want to run a lemonade stand with my friends on a hot summer's day.
I want to return to a time when life was simple, when all you knew were colors, multiplication
tables and nursery rhymes, but that didn't bother you because you didn't know what you didn't
                        know and you didn't care.
All you knew was to be happy, because you were blissfully unaware of all the things that
should make you worried or upset.
I want to think the world is fair. That everyone is honest and good.
I want to believe that anything is possible. I want to be oblivious to the complexities of life and
be overly excited by the little things again.
I want to live simply again. I don't want my day to consist of computer crashes, mountains of
paperwork, depressing news, how to survive when there are more days in the month than there
is money in the bank, doctor bills, gossip, illness and loss of loved ones.
I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth, justice, peace, dreams,
mankind and making angels in the snow.
So here are my checkbook and my car keys, my credit card bills and my 401(k) statements. I
                        am officially resigning from adulthood.
And if you want to discuss this further, you'll have to catch me first because,"Tag! You're it!"

                          The Tip

In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel
coffee shop and sat at a table.
A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. "How much is an ice cream sundae?"
                          "Fifty cents," replied the waitress.
The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied a number of coins in it.
"How much is a dish of plain ice cream?" he inquired.
Some people were now waiting for a table and the waitress was a bit impatient. "Thirty-five
                          cents," she said brusquely.
The little boy again counted the coins. "I'll have the plain ice cream," he said.
The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished
the ice cream, paid the cashier and departed.
When the waitress came back, she began wiping down the table and then swallowed hard at
what she saw. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies -
                          her tip.

                            Every one has a dream

Some years ago I took on an assignment in a southern county to work with people on public
welfare. What I wanted to do was show that everybody has the capacity to be self-sufficient,
were on public welfare, people from different racial groups and different family constellations.
I would then see them as a group for three hours every Friday. I also asked for a little petty
cash to work with as I needed it.
The first thing I said after I shook hands with everybody was, "I would like to know what your
dreams are." Everyone looked at me as if I were kind of wacky.
"Dreams? We don't have dreams." I said, "Well, when you were a kid what happened? Wasn't
there something you wanted to do?"
One woman said to me, "I don't know what you can do with dreams. The rats are eating up my
                            kids."
"Oh," I said. "That's terrible. No, of course, you are very much involved with the rats and your
kids. How can that be helped?"
"Well, I could use a new screen door because there are holes in my screen door."
I asked, "Is there anybody around here who knows how to fix a screen door?"
There was a man in the group, and he said, "A long time ago I used to do things like that, but
now I have a terribly bad back, but I'll try."
I told him I had some money if he would go to the store, buy some screening, and go and fix
                            the lady's screen door.
"Do you think you can do that?"
                            "Yes, I'll try."
The next week, when the group was seated, I said to the woman, "Well is your screen door
                            fixed?"
"Oh, yes," she said. "Then we can start dreaming, can't we?" She sort of smiled at me.
I said to the man who did the work, "How do you feel?" He said, "Well, you know, it's a very
funny thing. I'm beginning to feel a lot better." That helped the group to begin to dream. These
seemingly small successes allowed the group to see that dreams were not insane. These small
steps began to get people to see and feel that something really could happen. I began to ask
other people about their dreams. One woman shared that she always wanted to be a secretary.
I said, "Well, what stands in your way?" (That's always my next question).
She said, "I have six kids, and I don't have anyone to take care of them while I'm away."
                            "Let's find out," I said.

One woman said, "I got kids, too, but I could do that."
"Let's do it," I said. A plan was created and the woman went to school.
Everyone found something. The man who put in the screen door became a handyman. The

                              The Lion and the Mouse

It was a hot summer day. Sun was shining bright up in the sky. A lion was sitting under the
shade of a big tree and in some time got asleep. Nearby that tree, there was a hole, in which
there lived a mouse. When the lion was sleeping, the mouse came out of its hole and saw him
                              asleep.
Unaware of the lions strength, it got tickled by an idea. It thought of waking up the lion by
running over his body just for fun.
Unfortunately, the lion seized it in his strong paw. He was going to kill it when it begged, Spare
me, sir; some day I may repay your mercy.
The lion was amused hearing its words and let it go with a smile thinking that how can such a
small mouse be of any help to me.
But a day came, when the lion got into trouble. He got caught in a hunter's net under that very
tree. As a result, he started roaring loudly.
On hearing his roar, the mouse came out of its hole. This was the time to pay back the lion's
mercy. So, immediately it nibbled the cords of the net and set the lion free
                              Remember, mercy never goes unrewarded.
